MAJOR PORT SUBSYSTEM

We discussed recently about port.
Today we shall discuss the major port sub system
These subsystem are what works together to make a port carry our its activities effectively and efficiently.

MAJOR NAVIGATIONAL PORT SUBSYSTEM

We have,

  1. Navigational Aid Subsystem: These are equipments that enables safe arrival and exit of vessels from the port. They are placed along coasts to mark safe and danger zone and enables Mariners in determining their position. It makes Mariners to be aware of dangers both on land and on sea. They include lighthouse, buoys, tug boat etc.
  2. Quay Handling and Transfer subsystem: These is one of the major subsystem. It enables the loading and offloading of cargoes from the vessels. Examples include portal cranes, gantry cranes, forklift etc.
  3. Storage and Delivery Subsystem:  The storage system help in temporary storage of cargoes loaded & offloaded from the vessels. They ensure these cargoes are at safe condition before being loaded in the vessels or after being offloaded from the vessels. The delivery subsystem are responsible for moving in and out of the ports through channels like good roads network, rail way system, inter modal transport system.
  4. Coordination of the Port: With all the aforementioned subsystem, all these can not be carried out if the personnels are not there. They are workers  or port management that coordinate the performance of the Port and ensures it is carried out effectively and efficiently.                                                                                             In the subsequent lessons, we shall be taking each subsystem one after the other and explain the equipments used under it with diagram.
