WHAT IS A KEEL?
A keel is a structure made of timber,metal,or other materials(depending on the material the boat is made from) that protrudes below the boat
USES OF KEEL
- It prevents the boat from being blown by the wind thereby generating forward movement with it.
- It ensure the boat is balanced that is well settled on the river.
- It provides controls and prevent capsizing of the boat.
Before we proceed, we need to understand some certain forces that affect sailboat.
These forces helps the boat in its movement and enhances it journey.
We have forces that affect sailboat which include
- Force of the wind:The force propels the water thereby making it possible to sail
- Viscosity of the water: It slows the sailboat down
- Gravity: The force of gravity pulls the boat down
