BUOY

What comes to your mind when you heard of buoy?
What its function?
A buoy is a nautical floating device anchored into the sea to mark a channel, signal etc.

It is used in navigation of vessels, indication of location of channels and warning of hazards for mariners.

There are two general system of buoyage.

  1. Lateral: In this system, the location of each buoy indicates the direction of the danger relative to the route that is to be followed.
  2. Cardinal system: The location of each buoy indicates the approximate true bearing of safe water from danger it marks.

The
re are four types of buoys we might always encountered.
  • Red
  • Green
  • Red and green horizontally
  • Red and white vertically stripped
  1.  Green Buoy: It marks the port left side of a channel when entering a smaller body of water (Returning). This shows which side is safest to travel.
  2.  Red Buoy: It marks the right side while travelling.
  3. Red and Green horizontally Stripped Buoy: These are junction buoys which also might indicate an obstruction with two different ways around the obstruction. These buoys will indicate the preferred and secondary channel to be taken.
  4. Red and White Vertically Stripped: They are safe water or mid channel buoys indicating good depth of water. They can either be at left when returning or leaving.

MAJOR MARITIME SUBSYSTEM

MAJOR SUBSYSTEM OF MARITIME TRANSPORTATION. We started with Maritime transportation recently, so today we will be discussing about the major subsystem of Maritime transportation. It is classified majorly into four subsystem namely Port The way/Ocean or River Ship or vessels Motive power or carrying unit We shall discussion with what a port is PORT A port is said to be a terminal on land and on sea where ships loads and discharges cargoes and passengers. A port is from the Latin word "portus" meaning entry or gateway. A port connects two countries together and serves as interface between maritime and inland mode of transport. A port can either be to accommodate large vessels or boat depending on the depth which will help in understanding the type of vessels that can sail or dock in it. A port helped moves cargoes and passengers from one place to another and add revenue to an economy In the subsequent posts, we shall be discussing about the types a...

MAJOR PORT SUBSYSTEM

We discussed recently about port. Today we shall discuss the major port sub system These subsystem are what works together to make a port carry our its activities effectively and efficiently. MAJOR NAVIGATIONAL PORT SUBSYSTEM We have, Navigational Aid Subsystem:  These are equipments that enables safe arrival and exit of vessels from the port. They are placed along coasts to mark safe and danger zone and enables Mariners in determining their position. It makes Mariners to be aware of dangers both on land and on sea. They include lighthouse, buoys, tug boat etc.                      Quay Handling and Transfer subsystem:  These is one of the major subsystem. It enables the loading and offloading of cargoes from the vessels. Examples include portal cranes, gantry cranes, forklift etc.                                       ...
