QUAY HANDLING AND TRANSFER SUBSYSTEM

QUAY HANDLING AND TRANFER SUBSYSTEM

We started with the subsystem of a port. The first one we mentioned is navigational port system.
The second we shall consider here is quay handling and transfer subsystem.
They are the components which ensure the loading and offloading of cargoes from and in to the vessels. Without this equipment, offloading and loading can not be possible.
With this, we can classify cargoes into 3
  • Dry Bulk Cargoes
  • Liquid Cargoes
  • General Cargoes
DRY BULK CARGOES
In this type of cargoes, their handling facilities are in the form of power propelled. Conveyor belt usually fed at the backward end by a hopper (a very large container on legs). IN the case of bulk sugar, the sugar will be discharged into a hopper feeding by gravity to a railway wagon.

For grain, elevator or silos are normally used. They may be operated by pneumatic suction which sucks the grain out of the ship holds.

LIQUID CARGO HANDLING EQUIPMENT
The offloading of liquid product from the vessel is by movement of the liquid bulk cargo from the tanker through means of pipelines connected to the shore based storage tank.

GENERAL CARGO
It is also known as break bulk cargo. It is handled by cranes on the quay, floating cranes or by the ship's own cargo gear. Attached to such lifting gear is a shackle which links the crane or derrick with the form of cargo handling equipment being used.

TYPES OF CONTAINER LIFTING EQUIPMENT
  1. Ship to Shore container crane
  2. Portal slewing crane
  3. Rail mounted gantry crane
  4. Rubber tyre gantry
  5. Forklift trucks
  6. Reach Stacker
  7. Empty container handler
In subsequent lecture, we shall take them one after the other with pictures and videos

MAJOR MARITIME SUBSYSTEM

MAJOR SUBSYSTEM OF MARITIME TRANSPORTATION. We started with Maritime transportation recently, so today we will be discussing about the major subsystem of Maritime transportation. It is classified majorly into four subsystem namely Port The way/Ocean or River Ship or vessels Motive power or carrying unit We shall discussion with what a port is PORT A port is said to be a terminal on land and on sea where ships loads and discharges cargoes and passengers. A port is from the Latin word "portus" meaning entry or gateway. A port connects two countries together and serves as interface between maritime and inland mode of transport. A port can either be to accommodate large vessels or boat depending on the depth which will help in understanding the type of vessels that can sail or dock in it. A port helped moves cargoes and passengers from one place to another and add revenue to an economy In the subsequent posts, we shall be discussing about the types a...

MAJOR PORT SUBSYSTEM

We discussed recently about port. Today we shall discuss the major port sub system These subsystem are what works together to make a port carry our its activities effectively and efficiently. MAJOR NAVIGATIONAL PORT SUBSYSTEM We have, Navigational Aid Subsystem:  These are equipments that enables safe arrival and exit of vessels from the port. They are placed along coasts to mark safe and danger zone and enables Mariners in determining their position. It makes Mariners to be aware of dangers both on land and on sea. They include lighthouse, buoys, tug boat etc.                      Quay Handling and Transfer subsystem:  These is one of the major subsystem. It enables the loading and offloading of cargoes from the vessels. Examples include portal cranes, gantry cranes, forklift etc.                                       ...

OFFLOADING OF CONTAINER FROM A VESSEL

Today, we shall learn how container are being offloaded from a vessel. Please click on this link to watch the video, i tried uploading the video but it is not going through.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isIcqkYUHws After watching this video, we will explain those equipment used in transferring the container from the vessel to the port.
